Congress “Brazilian Migration in Portugal: Experiences, Activism, and Social Movements”

The Association of Brazilianists in Europe (ABRE) held its IV International Congress from 5 to 8 September 2023, at the ICS — Institute of Social Sciences and ISCTE — University Institute of Lisbon, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Europe has a strong tradition in Brazilian studies, as well as in scientific research and professional collaborations connected to Brazil. ABRE aims to provide a transdisciplinary forum for exchange, dissemination, and communication among students and professionals working in Europe who are interested in Brazil. The congresses it organises every two years seek to bring together individuals conducting research or any other type of collaboration related to Brazil, not limited to European researchers or those affiliated with European institutions.

The president of TransParadise, Freda Paranhos, had the honour of being invited by the Casa do Brasil in Lisbon to speak on crucial topics such as the presence of transgender individuals in decision-making positions, knowledge production, and leadership. This participation marks a milestone in TransParadise’s journey, underscoring its vital role in including transgender voices in important spaces for dialogue and influence.
