MigraMyths: Democracy, Disinformation and Immigration — “Hate Speech” panel

At TransParadise Association, we recognise the transformative power of words and the importance of narratives. This preamble, more than just an introduction, is a statement of principles from TransParadise, weaving together the keen insights of thinkers like Gloria Anzaldúa, bell hooks, and Paul B. Preciado. It invites reflection on the multifaceted reality of trans migrants, whose struggle for decent housing transcends physical space: it is a battle for the validation of identity, for security, and for the right to fully exist.

By bringing these issues into the context of the MigraMyths report, we expand the dialogue on inclusion and social justice, reinforcing the need for concrete actions and inclusive policies. The MigraMyths report by Casa do Brasil de Lisboa is an essential tool for understanding the breadth of housing discrimination in Portugal, offering data, analysis, and testimonies that illustrate the urgency of addressing this issue.

The conference “Democracy, Disinformation, and Immigration”

The conference “Democracy, Disinformation, and Immigration”, on 30 November 2022, took place at Palácio Cabral in Lisbon. It featured various speakers from academia, public institutions, and media outlets to discuss hate speech related to immigration, the politicisation of immigration, and the impact of disinformation on democracy.

This event is part of the #MigraMyths Project — Demystifying Immigration, which aims to debunk myths, stereotypes, and misinformation about immigration in Portugal. TransParadise took part in the panel “Hate Speech and Immigration in Portugal”, moderated by Ellen Theodoro and featuring anthropologist Pedro Almeida and journalist and creator of the Afrolink project, Paula Cardoso. TransParadise brought reflections on hate speech and immigration from a transfeminist and intersectional perspective.
